KALOS KIDS RESTROOM POLICY

Effective 12/7/2025

At Kalos Kids, we are committed to the safety and well-being of all children and volunteers. All volunteers ages 14+ have successfully passed a Kalos Church background check and get rescreened annually.

For children ages 0 through 2 years old, parents/caretakers are responsible for diaper changes unless they specifically request volunteer assistance. Volunteers must receive written consent from a parent/caretaker to change diapers and/or pull-ups.

For Preschool And Elementary ages 3 and up, we ask that children are able to use the restroom independently to minimize adult volunteer intervention.

Core Principles

  • The Two-Adult Rule: No adult should ever be alone with a child. Another adult volunteer must always be present and visible when a child uses the restroom or requires assistance.

  • Open Doors: If a child requires assistance, the door must always remain open, never locked.

  • Designated Restrooms: Where possible, children should use "kids only" restrooms to enhance safety and supervision.

Diapering & Accidents

  • Diapering: Diapering should be done in an open, visible area, such as the Nursery, Toddlers room, or Baby Feeding Room.

  • Volunteer Assistance: Only background-checked, female adult volunteers (or volunteers of the same biological sex of the child) should change diapers.

  • Accidents: In case of a diaper accident or a child needing assistance with their clothes, page the child's parent/caretaker.

Procedures for Potty-Trained Children

  • Company: If a child needs to go to the restroom outside of their classroom, they should go with a "buddy" or a group.

  • Supervision: The adult volunteer should walk the child to the restroom and wait by the door, while another volunteer maintains visibility from the classroom.

  • Assistance: For young children, a female volunteer (or volunteer of the same biological sex of the child) may enter the restroom to assist, but they must leave the door open and remain within sight of another adult.

  • Designated Runners: Typically the Service Director and Check-In volunteer will be responsible for escorting children to and from the restroom.

Hygiene

  • Handwashing: Ensure children and volunteers wash their hands thoroughly after using the restroom to maintain cleanliness.

  • Sanitation: Regularly clean and sanitize toys and surfaces in the children's ministry area.

Implementation

  • Training: Provide clear and consistent volunteer training at the time of onboarding, during weekly team huddles, and mandatory semi-annual team training events.

Communication: Communicate the policy clearly to parents/caretakers.
